    Part of the answer depends upon where you live, most states and some cities have their own income tax laws.

    You are allowed to lose a certain amount of money while setting up a business, so if you are in the writing business and say, making money from a monthly column with a magazine, then you could use that income to purchase cooking materials and supplies in anticipation of publishing your book.

    My accountant advised me to hold of deducting those costs until the article or book is published. But that’s in NY State.

    Also check with the Small Business Administration and your accountant. SBA has lots of free or inexpensive resources, including business plan help – link below – and also check with SCORE through your local Chamber of Commerce – some retired business execs have accounting backgrounds.
